Handmade Sampler Throw or Crib Blanket

It appears to be woven and knitted in combination forming continuous but contrasting blocks. They do not appear to be individual motifs sewn together in squares. Different pattern techniques and combinations of the 3 colors used are discernible in adjoining blocks. The overall effect is a blocky plaid pattern.

It is fringed on all 4 sides. Two opposite sides have double weave in the place of a finished selvage to protect it from fraying. The thread where it continues to fringe is of 2 ply yarn.

I tested a loose thread and believe this item to be made from cotton. The test method was simple. The burned thread did not melt. It burned to a clean dry ash and did not smell like wool. The test is not fool-proof however and the fabric content is still only a “best guess”.

It was photographed on the back of a recliner to give you an idea of the size and general impression of the piece. It would make an ideal throw, lap robe, crib blanket, or just use for display.

This item was acquired from an estate sale. There is no tag. I do not know its age or original source. It was hand made and I strongly suspect it was hand made locally. It is not unusual for items of this nature to be stored in a cedar chest or trunk for years until an estate is liquidated. It is used, but not abused, and still very pretty. There are no holes, repairs, or signs of wear.
